How to Change Your Gmail Address (Step-by-Step Guide)

For years, Gmail users couldn’t change their email address once it was created.
Now, Google is rolling out a feature that allows some users to change their Gmail address without losing emails.

This guide explains who can change their Gmail address and how to do it step by step.

Can You Change Your Gmail Address?

Yes — but only if your account has received the update.

Eligible accounts:

  • Personal Gmail accounts
  • Accounts where the option appears in settings

Not eligible:

  • Work or school (Google Workspace) accounts
  • Accounts without the update yet

Note: There is currently no way to manually enable this feature.

How to Change Your Gmail Address

If your account is eligible, follow these steps:

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click on Personal info in the menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Email section.
  4. Select Change Gmail address (if available).
  5. Enter your new @gmail.com username and confirm.

After the change:

  • Your new Gmail address becomes primary
  • Your old Gmail address stays linked as an alias
  • Emails sent to either address arrive in the same inbox
  • No emails, files, or subscriptions are lost

Important Limitations

  • Only works for personal Gmail accounts
  • The feature is being rolled out gradually
  • You can change your Gmail address only once per year
  • Some third-party apps may require manual updates after changing your email
